Dogeaters
Written by Jessica Hagedorn, it was part of the New Earth Academy Project in the summer of 2022 at CSSD. Dogeater - a derogatory term referring to Filipino natives who supposedly eat dogs instead of pork or chicken- explores the exploitative, authoritarian institutions colonial powers like Spain and the United States created in their colonized lands. In the Philippines, these powers cultivate elites to help maintain their power while subjugating the majority. In this project, I worked based on rhyme and musicality and explored the physicality of different social classes. I also choreographed dance scenes and transitions. The movement language we created was based on social class and the concept of beauty in the Philippine culture at that time. I worked with the laban technique and observation methodology.
